Funnel chanterelle

Craterellus tubaeformis

edible
  • Habitat: deciduous coniferous
  • Fruiting season: June – October
  • Cap: funnel scaly
  • Stem: cylindrical tapering hollow
  • Fertile layer: veined decurrent

Description

Fruitbody: Differentiated into cap-like and stem-like parts. The cap is 1–5 cm across, deeply funnel-shaped with an irregular margin; its surface is finely scaly, brown, greenish-brown or yellowish-brown.

Fertile layer: The underside has longitudinal, wrinkled, veined and deeply decurrent folds. Greyish-brown, sometimes with a grey-violet tinge.

Stem: 3–8 cm long, yellow with greenish or brownish shades, gradually tapering towards the base. Often curved or slightly lateral, hollow inside.

Flesh: Thin, flexible, pale yellowish to whitish. Smell and taste pleasant and mild.

Spores: Spore print whitish to pale cream; spores 8–11 × 5.5–7 µm, elliptical to ovoid and smooth.

Occurrence: A mycorrhizal species of damp, acidic deciduous and coniferous woodland. Fruits from June to October, often in groups.

Edibility: Edible and tasty.

Lookalikes: May be confused with the much rarer yellowfoot, which has a smoother fertile layer and a brighter yellow to orange stem. The wrinkled fertile layer is characteristic of funnel chanterelle.

Note: Craterellus refers to the deep funnel- or cup-shaped depression of the fruitbody; a crater was a large vessel used by the ancient Greeks for mixing wine and water. Tubaeformis means trumpet-shaped and refers to the downward-narrowing, hollow, trumpet-like form of the fruitbody.

Species description: Elias Magnus Fries first described the species; Lucien Quélet published the current name in 1888.
