Yellow-green floccularia

Floccularia luteovirens

edible Protected · 5 000 Ft
  • Habitat: meadow pasture
  • Fruiting season: May – October
  • Cap: convex spreading scaly radial
  • Stem: cylindrical fibrous scaly
  • Fertile layer: tooth adnate

Description

Cap: 5–10 cm across; convex when young, then spreading. The surface is densely covered with lemon-yellow to ochre-yellow scales, which largely wear away with age; the cap then appears more radially fibrous, with a few scale remnants.

Gills: Whitish to yellowish, adnate with a tooth and moderately dense.

Stem: Cylindrical and whitish. Below the fleeting, girdle-like ring it is yellowish, fibrous and scaly.

Flesh: Whitish and firm, with no distinctive or only a mild odour and taste.

Spores: Spore print whitish. Spores ellipsoid, finely dotted, 6–9 × 4.5–5 µm.

Occurrence: A soil-dwelling saprotroph of grassy places, meadows and pastures. It fruits from May to October and is rare in Hungary.

Edibility: Edible, but protected in Hungary and therefore not to be collected; fruit bodies should be left at their site.

Lookalikes: It may resemble the false knight and the death cap. The yellowish scaly cap, fleeting ring and grassland habitat assist identification.

Note: Floccularia derives from Latin „floccus”, referring to a woolly or tufted surface. luteovirens combines the Latin words „luteus”, meaning yellow or saffron-coloured, and „virens”, meaning green or verdant, referring to its yellow-green colouration.

Species description: First described by Johannes Baptista von Albertini and Lewis David von Schweinitz; transferred to Floccularia by Zdeněk Pouzar in 1957.
