excellent edible
  • Habitat: deciduous grassy
  • Fruiting season: September – December
  • Cap: flat funnel-shaped umbonate smooth velvety infolded
  • Stem: thickening club-shaped
  • Fertile layer: adnate decurrent sparse smooth

Description

Cap: Flat or only slightly funnel-shaped, mostly with a small protruding point in the center. Its margin is infolded, bent down. Initially relatively small and thin, 4-20 cm wide. Color brownish-yellow, ochre-yellow, pale yellowish or white.

Gills: Deeply decurrent. White, later yellowish, brownish-yellowish. Spore print white.

Stem: Highly developed, relatively thick, pillar-like, tapering upwards. 5-20 cm long, 1-6 cm thick. Color whitish or yellowish-brownish.

Flesh: Firm, fibrous in the stem, tearing into strands. Whitish. Smell and taste: Flour- or slightly radish-like. Smell characteristically pleasant, reminiscent of flour or spices, aromatic.

Spore: White; 7.5-9.5 x 6-7μm; rounded, smooth.

Occurrence: On forest edges, damp forest ditches, forest clearings, bushy, grassy places. Summer and early autumn mushroom. Not very common, but very conspicuous.

Edibility: Very good-tasting, edible mushroom. Suitable for all preparation methods, but due to its aromatic taste, it is advisable to consume it mixed with other mushrooms. Dries excellently, giving a beautiful dried product.

Confusion: Hardly confused with any other mushroom, at most the clouded funnel resembles it somewhat in shape, but its cap is large and gray.

Note: clitocybe means crooked head. geotropa comes from the Greek geo - earth, and the suffix tropa - way, the word means earthway.

Species description: When the pioneering French mycologist Jean Baptiste Pierre Francois Bulliard described this species in 1792 and gave it the name Agaricus geotropus, most gilled mushrooms belonged to a large Agaricus genus. In 1872, another French mycologist Lucien Quélet transferred it to the Clitocybe genus, as Clitocybe geotropa.
Harri Harmaja, a Finnish mycologist, proposed that I. geotropa and twelve other Clitocybe species belong to a new Infundibulicybe genus, so the new binomial name became Infundibulicybe geotropa. Infundibulicybe means funnel.
