Horn of Plenty

Craterellus cornucopioides

edible marketable
  • Habitat: deciduous coniferous
  • Fruiting season: July – October
  • Cap: funnel-shaped cracked
  • Stem: hollow
  • Fertile layer: decurrent

Description

Cap: Deeply funnel-shaped, the depression reaches down to the ground in the center of the mushroom, so the mushroom is hollow all the way to the base. The cap width is 3-8 cm. Its margin is rolled back, like a trumpet, and later becomes ragged, fringed torn. Color on the inside of the funnel is brownish-gray, brownish-black, black, dark gray:

Hymenium: On the outside of the mushroom, slightly wrinkled, deeply decurrent. Color powdery, bluish-gray, ash-colored, finally blackening. Spore print white.

Stem: Below the hymenium, the stem part is only very short, grayish, hollow inside, rooting. Mostly grouped, 2-8 mushrooms connected at one base. The whole mushroom is 5-12 cm tall, but almost all of this is the hymenium.

Flesh: Thin, firm, crunchy, gray, dark bluish-gray.

Spore: White; 11.5-16 x 7-10μm; ellipsoid, smooth, hyaline (glass-like).

Occurrence: Summer, autumn mushroom, especially common in late summer. On forest soil, shady places, in beech forests, oak forests and coniferous forests, but also in young dense forests, damp, mossy places, forest ditch banks, in groups. Sometimes difficult to spot, its color blends with the soil. So if you find one, it is worth looking further, because you can often collect larger quantities.

Edibility: Its smell is weakly spicy, its taste is not characteristic raw. Excellent spice mushroom, its aroma resembles truffles. Slightly reminiscent of morels in taste. Stores and dries well. Especially valuable dried, because its aroma, fragrance is even better than fresh. Try to mix horn of plenty into mushroom powder. Alone it is slightly chewy and blackens.

Confusion: The equally edible but less tasty, rarer gray chanterelle is very similar, but its smaller stem is not hollow inside.

Note: The cornucopia (cornucop) is the symbol of prosperity, fertility and luck, symbolized by a bull's horn. According to Greek mythology, it originates from one of the horns of the goat Amaltheia (sometimes appearing as a nymph) who nursed Zeus, or from the horn of the river god Achelous broken off by Heracles, which the Nereids (blue-haired sea nymphs) filled with all kinds of fruit. The genus name comes from the mythological cornucopia (cornucop). cornu means horn (in this case trumpet). craterellus comes from the word crater.

Species description: Carl Linné described this species in 1753 and named it Peziza cornucopioides. In 1825, Christiaan Hendrik Persoon published in a work and characterized it under the name Craterellus cornucopioides. Synonyms include: Cantharellus cornucopioides (L.) Fr., and perhaps more surprisingly, Pleurotus (oyster mushroom) cornucopioides (L.) Gillet.
